Revisiting Celebrity Drama: The Tom Cruise vs. Brooke Shields Feud Over Postpartum Depression and Its Peaceful Resolution

Hollywood’s landscape is certainly never short on drama among its top celebrities. One “feud” that briefly captured public attention and caused quite a stir in the mid-2000s was between the Mission: Impossible star, Tom Cruise, and the senior actress and model, Brooke Shields.

Uniquely, the trigger wasn’t an on-set romance or vying for the spotlight, but a sensitive mental health issue: postpartum depression (PPD) and the use of antidepressants.

This story began around 2005. At that time, Brooke Shields had just released a memoir titled Down Came the Rain, which was incredibly candid about her struggle with PPD after giving birth to her first daughter, Rowan, in 2003.

In the book, Brooke didn’t hesitate to share how difficult those times were and how she ultimately decided to seek medical help, including using antidepressants, which she felt were very helpful in restoring her condition.

Brooke Shields’ experience apparently drew a strong reaction from Tom Cruise. In an interview with Access Hollywood, Cruise, known for his very vocal anti-psychiatry and anti-psychotropic drug views (in line with his adherence to Scientology), openly criticized Brooke.

He called Brooke “irresponsible” for suggesting the use of medication for PPD. According to Cruise, PPD was not a medical condition that required drugs.

“When someone says it helps them, that’s just to cope with the symptoms, it doesn’t cure anything,” Cruise said with a rather intense tone at the time. He emphasized that there was no scientific basis proving medication could cure such mental conditions.

Cruise insisted the best way to overcome depression is through vitamins and exercise. He even dragged Brooke Shields’ career into his comments, which left many people shaking their heads.

For Brooke Shields, this comment from Tom Cruise was clearly shocking and hurtful. How could it not be? The two had known each other for a long time, even starring together in Cruise’s first film, Endless Love, in 1981.

Brooke felt that what Cruise said significantly trivialized the suffering she and millions of other mothers struggling with PPD had experienced.

Not staying silent, Brooke Shields issued a firm response. She wrote an opinion piece in the renowned newspaper, The New York Times, which subsequently went very viral. In her writing, Brooke asked Tom Cruise not to speak carelessly about things he didn’t understand.

“Tom should stick to saving the world from aliens,” Brooke wrote, mocking Cruise’s roles in science fiction films. “And let the women who are experiencing postpartum depression decide the best treatment options for themselves. I would venture to guess, Mr. Cruise has probably never experienced postpartum depression.”

Brooke stressed that PPD is a serious illness, and comments like those made by Cruise are dangerous and can hinder mothers who need help from seeking assistance. She hoped that Cruise’s “silly rant” would actually open many people’s eyes to the importance of PPD.

This incident garnered significant media coverage, and many criticized Tom Cruise’s comments. However, the story did not end there. About a year later, in 2006, Tom Cruise took a surprising step by contacting Brooke Shields directly.

Brooke Shields later recounted that moment in various interviews. She said Tom Cruise called her and invited her to meet. Initially, she was hesitant; even her publicist suggested that Tom come to Brooke’s house, so Brooke could feel more comfortable and control the situation.

The meeting took place. Brooke described Tom Cruise’s apology as something “sincere from the heart.” She said Tom came to her house and apologized for commenting carelessly and for involving her name in his personal views on medication.

Brooke felt no need to defend herself at all; she only sensed deep regret from Tom.

“I was so impressed by how sincere it was,” Brooke Shields recalled. “And I felt no need to defend myself at all, or felt that he was trying to convince me of anything other than the fact that he was truly sorry. And I accepted it.”

Remarkably, in the same year, when Tom Cruise married Katie Holmes, Brooke Shields was among the invited guests! Brooke attended the super lavish wedding in Italy, showing that the “drama” between them was truly over and there were no more hard feelings.

This story serves as an interesting example of how public disputes can be resolved privately and amicably. More than that, it also reminds us of the importance of listening to and understanding the experiences of others, especially regarding mental health. PPD is real, and everyone deserves the treatment they need without being judged or minimized.
