The Most Extraordinary Friendship: Chito the Fisherman and Pocho the Crocodile!

Ever heard a friendship story that sounds totally unbelievable?
Well, this one will definitely make you shake your head in disbelief and then maybe even shed a tear.
Just imagine: a fisherman becomes best friends with… a crocodile!
Sounds like a fairy tale, right? But this is a real story, and it happened in Costa Rica. This remarkable bond is well-documented and widely recognized, standing as a testament against any claims of it being a hoax.
An Unlikely Beginning
So, back in 1989, there was a kind-hearted fisherman from Costa Rica named Gilberto “Chito” Shedden.
One day, while he was by a river in the Siquirres region, Chito came across a truly heartbreaking sight: a large male crocodile in terrible condition.
The crocodile had been shot in the left side of its head, one of its eyes was damaged, and it looked like it was starving, its body thin and weak.
Apparently, the crocodile was shot by a local rancher who feared it would harm his livestock. Pretty cruel, right?
Chito, known for his gentle nature, couldn’t bear to see the crocodile dying. Most people would think twice, or even run away, from a crocodile, especially a wounded one.
But Chito was different. He carefully approached the crocodile, slowly dragged it into his boat. The crocodile weighed about 68 kilograms (150 pounds) when he found it!
Quite heavy, right?
Finally, he took the crocodile home.
At home, the poor crocodile was given the name “Pocho”. For six full months, Chito diligently nursed Pocho back to health.
He fed him chicken meat and fish every day, even hand-feeding Pocho directly into his mouth. Chito also applied medicine to his wounds and often gently stroked Pocho’s head.
He even frequently slept next to Pocho, making sure the crocodile wasn’t lonely or scared. Slowly but surely, Pocho began to recover.
His wounds healed, his body regained its weight, and most importantly, Pocho began to show signs of trust in Chito.
Let Him Go… But He Came Back? How?!
After Pocho was fully recovered and his body was strong again, Chito thought, “It’s probably time for Pocho to go back to his natural habitat.”
With a heavy heart, he took Pocho to a large, quiet lake, hoping Pocho could live freely in the wild again.
With mixed feelings, Chito released Pocho. He believed this was what was best for Pocho.
But do you know what happened the next morning?
Chito and his neighbors were stunned. When Chito woke up, he saw a giant green figure hanging out on his porch! Yes, that’s right, it was Pocho!
The crocodile had returned. It was as if Pocho was saying, “I don’t want to leave, I want to be with you!”
Seeing Pocho’s incredible loyalty, Chito finally decided: “Okay, Pocho. You can stay with me.” And that’s where the most legendary friendship story ever began.
The Chito-Pocho Duo Goes Global
After that incident, Chito and Pocho lived together at Chito’s home. Initially, Chito hid Pocho from the Costa Rican government due to regulations about keeping wild animals.
However, their friendship was too unique to be kept secret. Eventually, Chito managed to get an official permit from the government to keep Pocho, on the condition that he no longer hid him.
Chito and Pocho became the main attraction in the Finca Las Brisas area, an artificial lake near Chito’s home.
Every week, Chito and Pocho put on a show for tourists and locals. They swam together, Chito could go into the water and hug Pocho, and Pocho even often followed Chito’s commands, like coming ashore or shaking his head.
These movements weren’t the result of forced training, but purely from the emotional bond and trust that had been built over decades.
Pocho never once attacked Chito. Even though he was a crocodile, a dangerous predator!
As Pocho matured, he grew significantly, eventually reaching a length of around 5 meters (16 feet) and weighing over 450 kilograms (1,000 pounds).
His impressive size, combined with his gentle demeanor towards Chito, fascinated countless observers. Their friendship story quickly spread worldwide.
Chito and Pocho appeared on many international TV shows, including documentaries by National Geographic, and magazine articles from various countries.
They became a unique symbol of how love and understanding can bridge species differences, even between humans and dangerous reptiles.
Many animal experts and ethologists (animal behavior researchers) came to witness this miracle firsthand. They all agreed that Chito and Pocho’s relationship was extremely rare and extraordinary.
Farewell, Pocho…
Unfortunately, everything that lives must eventually come to an end. In 2011, after living with Chito for over 20 years, Pocho passed away from natural causes, at an estimated age of around 60.
No, Pocho the crocodile is not still alive. His passing was a profoundly sad moment for Chito. He lost his best friend.
Pocho’s funeral was also quite significant. He was buried in a small museum in Siquirres, the place where he often performed.
His funeral was attended by many people, including journalists and Chito-Pocho fans from all over the world. This showed how much their story had impacted so many lives.
Love is Power!
The story of Chito and Pocho isn’t just a unique tale about a pet. It’s a powerful reminder of the strength of love, patience, and empathy.
Chito taught us that with sincere and patient treatment, we can build incredible bonds even with the most feared animals.
Pocho, on the other hand, showed us that loyalty can come from anywhere, even from a crocodile that was once wild.
Their story continues to be told and serves as an inspiration for many people worldwide to care more about nature and all living creatures in it.
While information on Gilberto “Chito” Shedden’s current status is not widely publicized, his legacy and the incredible bond he shared with Pocho endure.
So, if you ever need real proof of the magic of friendship that transcends boundaries, always remember the story of Gilberto “Chito” Shedden and his beloved crocodile, Pocho!
